Miracles deceiving many into unclean sects and churches

Jesus healing the blind
Christ healing the blind

Let's talk about miracles. Many sects advertise some sort of miracles related to their activities. Whether these are true or not doesn't really matter. Jesus Christ is the perfect example regarding the true miracles. We can read from various places that He actually forbid to tell about them! Let's read a few related verses:

3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. (Matt.8:3-4)

29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. (Mt.9:30)

13 And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

14 And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. (Lk.5:13-14)

42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;

44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. (Mark.1:42-44)

42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. (Mark.5:42-43)

Good works should be hidden

Why did Jesus deny to tell about his good works? Johann Arndt (d.1621), in his Postil, says that we shouldn't look for honor, glory, or anything related from the world, and Jesus Himself set an example for us. This is why our perfect example, Lord Jesus Christ, told not to spread the news of His good works to others! Why would you do the opposite? Thus we read:

4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (Mt.6:4)

This is why the true Christians don't boast about the miracles, good works and such. There's absolutely no need to receive glory from the world. Instead, good works should be done in secret.

What about raising the dead and similar great miracles, do we see them happening today? In my opinion, before the Biblical canon was finished, there were plenty of great miracles taking place. They were pointing out the real Christians. Thus, the people were able to see the just from the heretics. There has always been some kind of miracles to this day but to the lesser extent. Today, people tend to advertise miracles and wish to believe them instead of believing the gospel. Remember:

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. (Matt.6:1)
