Earrings in the Old Testament

A promise to Abraham, the great substance (or great possessions) points to the Exodus passover; The Israelites got a good amount of gold and silver, also in the form of earrings.

14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. (Gen. 15:14)

Gifts to Rebekah. Notice the weight, half a shekel, which corresponds to the atonement money, see Ex. 30:13. The word earring is mentioned three times in the chapter, thus pointing to the Trinity (God, Son, Holy Spirit).

22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; (Gen. 24:22)

30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. (Gen. 24:30)

47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. (Gen. 24:47)

Jacob and his family:

4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. (Gen. 35:4)

Lord's commandments to Moses:

22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians. (Ex. 3:22)

2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver and jewels of gold. (Ex. 11:2)

35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

36 And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians. (Ex. 12:35-36)

Golden calf

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. 3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. (Ex. 32:2-3)

5 For the Lord had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee. (Ex. 33:5)

Tabernacle material

22 And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the Lord. (Ex. 35:22)

Numbers

50 We have therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the Lord. (Num. 31:50)

Gideon / Judges

24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks. (Judg. 8:24-26)

Job

11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. (Job. 42.11)

Proverbs

12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. (Prov. 25:12)

Song of Solomon. In some translations this is earrings.

11 We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver. (Song of Sol. 1:11)

Isaiah

20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings, (Is. 3:20)

Jeremiah Earrings and face painting go hand-in-hand:

30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. (Jer. 4:30)

Ezekiel

12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head. (Ez. 16:12)

Hosea

13 And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the Lord. (Hos. 2:13)

New testament verses related to earrings

Peter Wearing of gold must include earrings as the early church fathers stood unanimously against such adorning.

3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; (1.Pt. 3:3)

Paul Romans used to wear also pearl earrings.

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; (1.Tim. 2:9)
